The First World Conference on the Pharmacology of Natural and Traditional Medicines, sponsored by the Section on Pharmacology of Natural Products of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) and the Chinese Pharmacological Society (CNPHARS), will be held from September 9th to 12th, 2009, in Hangzhou, China.
The theme of the conference is “The present and the future of natural and traditional medicines”. The meeting will consist of oral communications, posters presentations and discussion sessions, all focusing on basic pharmacological, toxicological, clinical researches as well as on new drug discovery and development based on or related to natural and traditional medicines or ethnomedical resources. The conference will offer a golden opportunity for all delegates and guests to expose and communicate their results, new ideas, new methods and technologies in the pharmacological study of the natural and traditional medicines.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we look forward to welcoming scientists from all over the world to get-together in the beautiful green city of Hangzhou, one of the jewels of China. Time and Venue
The conference will be held in the HNA Resort Huagang Hangzhou, Hangzhou, China, September 9th to 12th, 2009. Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, a city famous for its natural beauty and historical and cultural heritages, has been described as: “Above is paradise, below is Suzhou and Hangzhou” in an ancient praise. As one of China's seven famous ancient capital cities, the famous Italian traveler Marco Polo described it during the Yuan Dynasty as "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world" , and since it has been termed ”Paradise on Earth”. Hangzhou has long been a tourist destination for Chinese travelers attracted to the beauty of the West Lake, and is now becoming a favorite spot for international travelers. In addition, Hangzhou is also the political, economical and cultural center of the southern part of the Yangtze River Delta.

The scientific program of the conference will include plenary lectures, symposia and poster presentations.

The abstract include the following information:
Title: Not more than 150 characters including spaces.
Authors:
? Enter all the co-authors’ names. The writing order is first name followed by the family name (family name in capital letters). The participant may be the first presenting author of one abstract only, however, a participant may be second or subsequent author of other abstracts.
Affiliations: Enter the institutions for all your coauthors.
Abstract
? The body of the abstract (include key words and acknowledgement) should be no more than 1600 characters including spaces.
? Each abstract should contain a sentence stating the study objective; a brief statement of methods; a summary of the results obtained; and a statement of the conclusions. Use standard abbreviations for units of measure. Other abbreviations should be spelled out in full at the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.

Neuroprotective effect of taurine against acute cortical neurons injury induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation

Abstract: AIM Taurine was reported neuroprotective under several ischemic models in vivo. In this study, the direct effect of taurine against oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) inducing acute neuronal injury and the underlying mechanisms in vitro were investigated. METHODS Four hours OGD was used to induce in vitro ischemic injury in rat cortical neuron. Taurine 5, 10 and 20 mmol·L-1 was added 20 h before and during 4 h OGD period respectively. Mortality rate of neuron was assayed by MTT and flow cytometry methods. Level of neuronal intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ( [Ca2+]i ) was detected by Fura 2/AM loading. Amino acid concentrations in culture media were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS Under OGD conditions, neuronal death was markedly increased, and the levels of neuronal [Ca2+]i and extracellular glutamate were enhanced obviously. Taurine pretreatment obviously decreased the percentage of neuronal death induced by OGD. In addition, abnormal elevation of neuronal [Ca2+]i and extracellular glutamate level induced by OGD both were markedly repressed by taurine. CONCLUSION Taurine can alleviate rat cortical neuron injury induced by OGD, the mechanisms were likely due to repressing calcium overload and inhibiting excessive release or leakage of glutamate under such conditions.

Registration Fee
Early registration fee for full delegates is 300 USD and late registration is 400 USD; for students, 150 and 200 USD; and for accompanying persons, 80 and 120 USD, respectively. The deadline for early registration is May 31, 2009 and the website for registration will be open soon.
